COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Statement

We are now entering our “new normal” phase but there is certainly nothing normal about this new normal.

Millions of people all over the world are working from their homes for the first time. Millions more are looking for temporary work or trying to figure out how to file for unemployment, how to pay mortgages, rent and put food on the table. Everyone is trying to stay healthy and be productive without losing their minds to boredom. We have seen many acts of kindness and community spirit.

Never before in the history of the world have we relied so heavily on the internet to work, play and stay connected and safe.

As we negotiate the weeks and months to come, people will be and are already experiencing the reality of the loss and grief that will follow on an enormous scale as the reality of this new normal hits home.

“Who am I now that I have lost my job?” – loss of identity, belonging, anxiety, shock, confusion, helplessness, shame, denial, survivor guilt, fear of losing control – these are the kinds of emotions people may experience, and there are many more physical manifestations of loss and grief as well, such as nausea, tremors, sweating and headaches.

We recognise that these are extraordinary times, and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are being felt deeply throughout communities. While the doors of NALAG are temporarily closed, we are still available by phone to provide support, just as we have done continuously for the past 43 years.

There are also many helpful resources on the NALAG website.

On behalf of our Board, staff and volunteers, we urge you to please be calm, keep safe, practice spatial and social distancing, wash your hands, look after your health and wellbeing, and be kind to each other.

Together, we will see this through with you.
